6th grade – Math Syllabus
Welcome to Middle School! My name is Angela Pinto and I will be teaching the grade level 6th grade math class. This year we will journey together through math concepts! I know that some students have anxiety about math, may feel math is not connected to the world in which they live, or just don’t like math. I will be working hard to help them feel confident and less anxious about doing math. We will be connecting math to our lives and relating big picture concepts to the work that we do in math class. We will be reasoning our way through methods and justifying our solutions. We will be testing ideas and forming opinions, developing reasoning, and coming up with explanations. My hope for this year is to have fun while learning math!
The curriculum that we will be using is “Big Ideas Math”. Your student will be able to access the book through the publisher’s website and/or download it into his/her computer. I will be providing a login and password to each student during the coming week.
The “Big Ideas Math” web site is: https://www.bigideasmath.com/BIM/login

Chapter 7: Equations and Inequalities

Tests and Quizzes
Students will have two quizzes for every chapter. At the end of the chapter they will have a test. Quizzes will be given on the days following the corresponding sections. Tests will never be a surprise; students will have 2 to 4 days’ notice. If time allows, there will be a final at the end of the year covering the entire curriculum. This year we are going to use a combination of paper and online tests which will help us track your student’s progress and needs.
Homework
Expect a homework assignment every night. This should take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete. Sometimes students have time to finish their homework during class. I will emphasize to students the importance of showing their work in an organized manner.
· I expect students to write the assignment in his/her math journal.
· I expect students to do homework corrections before they start the new assignment.
· Students will be able to check news and homework on the webpage.
· You will be able to access my website through the school website.
· I expect students to return tests and quizzes with a parent signature.
Vocabulary
Students will write vocabulary definitions, take notes, and copy examples in their journal.
This will be part of a student’s participation. Students will be able to print vocabulary flashcards through the book’s website to study them.
Sending Papers Home
· Homework is returned directly to the student since it will be in the homework journal. I expect the students to keep all their homework and notes organized in a combined notebook.
· Quizzes will be returned directly to the student before a chapter test, this will allow your child to review some weak areas on the corresponding chapter. Quizzes can be re-submitted for a better grade.
· Tests will be given directly to the students; parents will be asked to sign them.
Materials
Students need to have a ruler, compass, protractor, and calculator to help them complete their homework. Students should have access to a calculator at home.
Parents
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress in my class, please e-mail me at [email protected] we can also set up a meeting if that is your preference. I am always happy to discuss your child’s math needs. School rules prohibit using email for serious discussions regarding students, however, we can use e-mail for daily contact about issues we are working on, simple questions, or to set up meetings.
