6th grade – Religion Syllabus
Welcome to 6th grade Religion! My name is Angela Pinto and I will be your student’s Religion teacher. This year we will be using the book “Finding God, Our Response to God’s Gifts” from Loyola Press.
Together we are being called by The Holy Spirit to deepen our faith! We will journey through the Old Testament and view God’s faithfulness to his Chosen People along with the Salvation we find in Jesus. Continuing in God’s Love, we will study about how God’s presence is spread throughout the world through the Church. We will study Old Testament prophets, relating them to how we encounter Jesus in the sacraments today, and will end the year discerning morality while focusing on living like Jesus.
Course Overview
Unit 1: God, Our Creator and Father
Unit 2: Jesus, Our Lord and Savior
Unit 3: The Church, Our Community in the Spirit
Unit 4: Sacraments, Our Way of Life
Unit 5: Morality, Our Lived Faith
Grading
Grades for Religion are weighted as follows:
Homework/Tests/Work 25%
Participation in Class 25%
Participation during Mass 25%
Community service 25%
Homework, Class Work, and Tests
Most of the homework during the year will be work that was not finish during class. Students will have an open book/notes test every chapter. During the year students will be required to memorize the Act of Hope, the Vocation Prayer, and the Luminous Mysteries. We will also review some other prayers like the Act of Contrition and the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and Hail Mary. We will have a Religion binder in the class where students will keep their work. I will return all material, projects, and tests directly to each student.
Community Service
Students are expected to complete 30 hours of community service during the year. They are required to spread these hours out during the year. It is expected that each trimester your student will complete at least 10 hours of community service. As much as 10 hours logged during the summer may be applied to their first trimester. Students will return their community service log at the end of each trimester, detailing their community service and signed by the responsible adult (see attached form). In 6th grade, students may take part in the Issaquah Meals Program, which is organized through parent volunteers.
More information about taking part in this program will be provided to all families through the meals program coordinator during the school year.
Mass Participation
Students will attend mass twice per month at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Snoqualmie or at St. Joseph Church in Issaquah. Each class helps prepare at least one of the Masses during the year. Students will work with me to give themselves a grade on their mass participation using the Mass Participation Rubric (example attached).
If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress in my class, please e-mail me at [email protected]; we can also set up a meeting if that is your preference.
